Hi all

UPDATE 30 August 2012

Well the computer is half-mended By that I mean that it turned out to be the internal power supply that had gone kaput.  So, the PC doctor turned up this evening, complete with numerous power supplies, but they were all too big.  He has rigged us up temporarily with a too-big power supply which has to stay OUTSIDE the computer(!) and it has a fan that sounds like a vacuum cleaner!  He will be back in a couple of days with a brand new made-to-measure power supply, and then it will be fully mended.  I'm so delighted!!

God, that fan is so loud :

I might not be around much for a while because our main PC has died and we're reduced to one laptop between three of us, and no spare money to buy a new computer.  I'm usually last in the pecking order when it comes to using the computers, but hopefully I'll still be able to get on sporadically.

I've got the contact details for a PC Doctor, who apparently is very good and likes to try and resurrect dead PCs.  Plus his rates are supposed to be quite cheap.  Trouble is he's away until the end of August.  Ah, well ... patience, patience
